He came to the track and ran some laps in a street car in order to
familiarize himself with the four mile long, 14 corner road circuit near
Elkhart Lake Wisconsin. This weekend he enlisted the aid of former Champ
Car driver and Trans Am and Formula Atlantic champion Tom Gloy, for tips
on driving the high speed track.
As it turned out, Max's preparation was to serve him well as several
mechanical problems-an engine failure, gearbox problems and then a
seized throttle-kept him on the sidelines for much of the three practice
sessions.
Road America is a very demanding circuit-with three long straight-aways
and average speeds over 140 miles per hour. Mechanical
problems such as these were common throughout the paddock this weekend.
Not one to sit idly by when he was forced to the sidelines, Max
jumped on his scooter and went to a number of different sections of the
circuit so he could watch the other drivers driver the track.
When the final practice was concluded on race morning, Max had proved
that he had learned the circuit well, he was third quickest while
running only four timed laps.
