When it came to qualify for the race Max and his Arciero
Blair crew were ready.
"After this morning's session I sat with my engineer (Bryan
Maw) and talked about a good set up for the car," said Wilson
after he had qualified third fastest, his best qualifying effort in
his young CART career. "We came up with a good solution and the
car improved a great deal for qualifying. We changed a lot of things
with our suspension which helped a lot, so I think that was the
difference."
Max somewhat underplayed how much improvement they had made. His
time fell almost one and a half seconds, an improvement that was
matched by few others in the field.
In fairness to half the field, it should be noted that shortly
after Max's qualifying session it began to drizzle and then rain.
This kept the other qualifying group from running on a completely
dry track.
"I am so proud to be part of this new team," said
Wilson. "We made a lot of changes to the car after the practice
and I think our time would have still put us in the top-ten or
top-twelve starting positions. Our qualifying time of starting third
will give us an advantage going into the first turn, which is tough
here. Starting third also gives our team a big boost of confidence;
all of the guys have worked so hard."
