Beach.
Running in the first group's session in wet and then drying
conditions, Max was very impressive. Until the final minutes of the
second group's session his time of 1:10.683 seconds had him as high as
eighth on the grid.
The track conditions improved more for the second group however,
and Max ended his first qualifying round at Long Beach 21st on the
grid. He might have been even higher had he not made a mistake on cold
tires.
Wilson's time was slightly more than 2 seconds off pole winner
Helio Castroneves' pace. Max's best lap was just .008s. slower than
20th qualifier and 1998 series champion Alex Zanardi's best.
