Between the final practice
session on Saturday morning and the qualifying session that
afternoon, the Arciero-Blair team had to change the motor and the
turbocharger on Max Wilson's Driving 101 Ford Lola.
Changing the turbo is a very difficult and time-consuming
activity and as a result Max had only nine minutes in which to
qualify.
He made the most of it though.
The normal procedure after changes like that is for the driver to
take what is called an installation lap and then return to the pits
to check that all systems are working properly.
There wasn't enough time for that.
Max left the pits and stayed on the track for the final nine
minutes of the session. All the mechanical changes were performed
properly and Max stayed on the track. There wasn't enough time left
in the 30 minute session for the Max and the team to make any setup
changes that would have allowed him to post a faster time and he
qualified in the 24th position.
