Max was sixth quickest in the morning practice prior to the race
and he and the team were hoping for good things.
Unfortunately enough good things just didn't happen.
Early in the race a sensor failed in the gear shift mechanism,
causing Wilson's Lola to be considerably less quick than it should
have been. The sensor failure also caused the pit lane speed limiter
to not function, making entrance to and exit from the pits a slower
than normal process. By lap 35 Max was a lap down to the leaders.
Shrewd pit strategy-the team kept him out when others pitted
during one of the full-course yellow periods-made up that lost lap,
putting Max in 18th spot when the next full-course yellow occurred.
He moved up three more spots to finish 15th.
"It was a long race today. For a long time I was running
alone away from the pack and that can make it more difficult to run
that way and keep your focus," said Wilson. "I really
wanted to score some points for the team. The team called a good
race and did good stops and did a great job."
