Although Max Wilson qualified his Arciero Blair Racing winnerB2B
Lola Ford Cosworth in the 21st spot for the Tenneco Automotive Grand
Prix of Detroit, he showed in the final practice before race that he
was ready to go. He finished the warmup session in 12th spot.
Once the race started Max found himself in some high profile
company, shadowing Paul Tracy, with Max Papis in his wake.
Eventually working his way to the 13th spot it appeared that Max
was on his way to scoring his first CART FedEx Championship points.
It wasn't to be though. He brushed one of the concrete walls
lining the bumpy circuit and bent his right rear suspension. Even
though he continued on unabated, the suspension eventually failed
and he was forced to the sidelines, his race done after 35 laps.
"On the restart in Turn Two, the tires were a bit
cold," said rookie driver from Brazil. "I brushed the wall
with the rear tires on the exit. From that point on the suspension
was bent. I tried to gain some positions on the restart and I hit
the wall. There's a crown in the pavement and that unsettled the
car. It was an unlucky mistake."
He won't have long to wait to redeem himself. Practice for the
Freightliner/G.I. Joe's 200 on the Portland International Raceway
road circuit starts next Friday.
