HONDA GRAND PRIX OF MONTEREY

14.OCT
Report from the Honda Grand Prix of Monterey Race

It appeared that after a difficult start to the weekend, Max Wilson and the Arciero-Blair Racing team were going to have a good result in the Honda Grand Prix of Monterey at Laguna Seca.

Max Wilson leads Bryan Herta and eventual winner Max Papis through the corkscrew in this weekend's Honda Grand Prix of Monterey at Laguna Seca.

Mechanical difficulties had kept Max and his Driving 101 Ford Lola from spending much time on the track during practice and qualifying. Consequently, Max had to start from the 24th position.

When the race began Max started gaining positions. He moved up two spots on the first lap and picked up two more by the start of lap four. Five laps later he was in 19th. At the end of the next lap he was out of the race.

An ill-advised passing attempt by Bryan Herta at the end of lap 10 sent Max and his Lola off circuit with suspension damage. Max's day was over.

"Bryan hit me when Michael (Andretti) was overtaking us," said Wilson. "We were packed up for the green flag and we were all racing for a few laps. I tried to avoid Bryan but he came straight at me in the corner. He had also hit me a few laps before."
