The Road America 220 was scheduled to start at 1 p.m. EDT but
standing water on the fast back straightaway caused the start to be
delayed.
When they did take to the track instead of seeing the green flag
at the end of their scheduled pace laps the CART FedEx Championship
cars got a waved yellow.
Four laps under the yellow were followed by the green flag to
start the actual racing. By then most of the circuit was relatively
dry.
That was not the case on the back straight though and that was
where Max's race came to an untimely end.
Water running across the track-one of the lowest points on the
circuit that has over 200 feet in elevation changes-meant that the
spray thrown up by the 900 horsepower open-wheel cars made visibility
almost nonexistent.
Two cars in front of Max was Tony Kanaan. He slowed dramatically
as he hit the water. Bryan Herta was following Kanaan and had to
slow dramatically also. Max was in Herta's draft, didn't have any
chance to brake and collided with Herta's car.
Both cars were damaged and out of the race on the spot.
"I didn't see what happened, actually. All I know is I ended
up on top of Bryan," said Wilson. "It seems like he braked
suddenly and I could not see and that was it."
