RICHMOND,
VA. (June 29, 2002) - Rayovac Blair Racing driver Alex Barron of
Menifee, Calif. finished tenth today.
Blair Racing and its driver Barron
raced on the "bullring" at Richmond International Raceway
today in the SunTrust Indy Challenge, round eight of 15. On the
0.75-mile, D-shaped oval, Barron qualified eighth for the 250-lap
event out of the 22 drivers in the Indy Racing League (IRL). Today's
race was a two-day event for the IRL field, the second of five two-day
events of the season. Barron was spectacular at the start, passing
three cars coming across the line in fifth on the first lap. He raced
the Rayovac Blair entry hard moving it up to third by lap 20 and
remained in third until lap 79. He was back in third by lap 92 but the
car had a misfire that could not be pinpointed and the number 44
started to slip back. Barron ran as high as second in the Richmond
event and went on to finish tenth. This is the team's sixth top-ten
finish of the season.
"We had a great car at
the start of the race today," said Barron. "We did have a
little under steer at the beginning, the temperatures changed and
the track was slippery at night. We did have perfect balance and it
was easy to move forward; I thought we were in good shape. The track
actually got slicker the longer we ran due to the temps and the
build up of the cars that ran earlier today."
The summer swing of racing
continues next week at Virginia Kansas Speedway on July 7. While
America celebrates the long July 4th weekend, the next race, the
Ameristar Casino Indy 200 will be held on the 1.5-mile tri-oval
located in Kansas City, KS . It will air live on ABC at 1:00 p.m.
(EDT). The ninth race of the season will also air live on the IMS
Radio Network; the IRL's official website can help you locate a radio
station near you and also has live timing and scoring at www.indyracing.com.
