DALLAS
(June 8, 2002) - Rayovac Blair Racing driver Alex Barron of Menifee,
Calif. finished tenth today in the Boomtown 500.
Barron and the Blair Racing team
entered the sixth race of the season after a successful month at Indy.
Barron has been tapped by the media as a top young talent coming to
Texas, finishing a career-best fourth in the No. 44 Rayovac Blair
Racing Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone at Indianapolis climbing to fifth
in the series drivers' point standings. The Blair Racing driver
started 19th for the 300 mile event on the 1.5-mile paved tri-oval.
This is the first time Barron and the team has competed at fast track
of Texas, Texas Motor Speedway. This was also its first time racing
under the lights as the Texas event is one of three night races this
season.
Barron raced hard for 200 laps
under the hot, hot heat of Texas; over 91 degrees today with little or
no wind. The heat didn't stop Barron or Blair Racing today running
towards the front and finishing in the top-ten for the fourth in six
races. The Rayovac Blair entry ran as high as third today in the 23
car field.
"Racing under the lights was
what I expected, it was fun," said Barron. "Racing tonight
was fun; I wish we could race more often under the lights. Racing
under the lights gives it more character because we do so many day
races. The car started going faster at the end of the race when it
cooled off, we had a good run today. We had good pit stops today,
finished in the top-ten and moved up in points. I'm skeptical about
Pikes Peak, I have not seen the track before in person or on
television. I'm getting in on Friday early and will go around the
track with John (Dick, the engineer)."
Blair Racing armed with experienced
management and strong driving talent is currently seventh in the
drivers' championship point standings, led the recent Indianapolis 500
twice, finishing fourth in the 500 mile event, has four-top ten
finishes, one top-five finish, and driver Alex Barron was named the
2002 Indianapolis co-rookie of the year.
The Boomtown 500 is the first of a
crucial stretch of four races in five. The summer stretch started
today at Texas and continues next weekend, June 16 at Pikes Peak
International Raceway, June 29 at Richmond International Raceway and
July 7 at Kansas Speedway. The Radisson Indy 225 will be held on the
one-mile oval located in Colorado Springs, CO. It will air live on ABC
at 4:00 p.m. (EDT). The seventh race of the season will also air live
on the IMS Radio Network; the IRL's official web site can help you
locate a station near you and also has live timing and scoring www.indyracing.com.
