Blair
Racing Finishes 12th at Michigan
BROOKLYN, MICH. (July 28, 2002) - Rayovac Blair Racing driver
Alex Barron of Menifee, Calif. finished 12th today.
Coming off a win from last week's Firestone 200 in Nashville, Blair
Racing and its driver, Barron, entered the race on a high note. A
week long celebration ended when the first practice started; Barron
and the Blair Racing team refocused, getting ready for the Michigan
400. Round eleven of 15 races in the 2002 Indy Racing League (IRL)
was the inaugural IRL event on the 2-mile D-shaped oval. Barron has
raced before at the legendary oval that has been hosting races since
1968. He started seventh for the 200 lap event. Barron ran in the
top-ten up until his third pit stop on lap 133. The right rear lug
(wheel nut) jammed and the stop was almost an agonizing one minute
long. He pitted while in seventh place and return to the race in
14th. Two laps down, the Blair Team strategized during the remainder
of the race to get back the lost laps. Barron pitted for fuel only
on lap 183 and went on to finish 12. Barron and the Blair Racing
team have two top-five finishes and eight top-ten finishes for the
season. Four races remain on the 2002 IRL schedule.
"It rained last night and the track was green today," said
Barron. "We made some adjustments on the stop and thought we
were in a good position. We had a problem with the right rear lug
nut and obviously it cost us pretty much what we were working
towards during the race. You have good weekends and bad weekends;
let's hope we have more good ones before the season is over. I think
we will be quick at Kentucky and I think we'll be quick throughout
the year. It is all the little things that make a difference between
a win and 12th place."
The series continues August 11; at the Kentucky Speedway. The
1.5-mile, oval is located in Sparta, KY. The race airs live on ABC
live at 1:30 p.m. (EDT). The twelfth race of the season will also
air live on the IMS Radio Network. The IRL's official website can
help you locate a radio station near you; it also has live timing
and scoring at www.indyracing.com.
